When
On The Hour was broadcast, it launched a generation of comedy
and comedians.
It was a true ensemble piece which was brought together by producer
Armando Iannucci.
Iannucci
recruited GLR DJ Christopher Morris after hearing his work on
the London station, and brought in a highly talented army of
writers & performers to back the whole thing up.
Writing credits went to Morris & Iannucci, Stewart Lee,
Richard Herring, David Quantick, Steven Wells and Andrew Glover,
alongside members of the principal cast; Steve Coogan, David
Schneider, Rebecca Front, Doon Machican and Patrick Marber.
On The Hour would eventually relocate to television as BBC2's,
"The Day Today", but not before it established
itself as
a landmark in radio comedy, and went on to win several awards
including the 1992 Writer's Guild award for Best Comedy.
A compilation of material is available on a BBC Radio Collection
cassette, although Lee and Herring (whose total contribution
comprised about 30 or 40% of the material used) refused consent
for any of their material to be included due to a copyright
dispute.
As a result, the tapes were edited down by Armando Iannucci
to remove all of their input.
More can be read on the reasons for this dispute in the "press"
section of this site.
