Al Murray is a long standing friend & contributor of
Lee & Herring. Look closely, you'll see Al in the fist
of fun book, and TV show, although perhaps his most prominent
Lee & Herring appearance is in This Morning With Richard
Not Judy, in which he - in character as the Landlord - throws
Simon Quinlank out of his pub during yet another ridiculous
hobby.
He's also appeared in The Saturday Night Armistice, with Armando
Iannucci, Peter Baynham & David Schneider, and as Harry
Hill's simple brother Alan in the Harry Hill show.
Murray also won the coveted Perrier Award at the Edinburgh
Festival in 1999 with his "Pub Landlord" Character,
this hugely successful character gaining more and more momentum
& admirers, it was almost inevitable that he would ultimately
be given the opportunity to bring "The Guv'nor"
to television.
And he did. Sky Television commissioned a sitcom based around
the character which Al penned two series of, with the aid
of Richard Herring (and sometimes Stewart Lee, who would lend
a hand with script editing duties.)
Richard Herring not only co-wrote the show with Murray, but
also appeared in a regular role as a postman, as well as taking
an active part in overseeing the recordings of the show.
Another Lee & Herring stalwart, Rebecca Front, appeared
regularly in the show as the brewery representative, and nemesis
of Murray's bigoted, bullet-headed character.
Here at fistoffun.net, we're not going into huge amounts
of detail on the show - and the reason for this is that there's
a hugely completist fansite dedicated to it at www.timegentlemenplease.net
which includes episode guides, video clips, screen grabs and
all sorts of stuff, so get
on over there now to find out more about the show.
